Our Yorkville dental office and Scarborough dental clinic staff provide a warm and friendly atmosphere for children’s first-time visits to the dentist. We avoid terms that children might find frightening! We want children to look upon their visits with curiosity and excitement, rather than fear.

What to expect at your child’s first visit to the dentist

We recommend parents bring their children in by 2 years of age for their first dental visit. Even if your child cannot sit still in the chair, we like to familiarize children early on with the office environment and get them as comfortable as possible. Children who see a dentist from an early age are less likely to fear the dentist later in life.

At our dental offices in Toronto, your child’s first visit to the dentist is called a happy visit where your child is introduced to the dental office and our dental staff.

As confidence and trust are established, we can introduce them to more. We will judge how they are feeling and adjust our treatment accordingly. Our aim is for them to be excited about their dental visit and proud of having a cavity-free dental checkup.

Oral hygiene and nutrition lasts a lifetime

Sugar and carbohydrate-rich foods, such as bread and crackers, can result in tooth decay amongst children. Even healthy foods such as milk have milk sugars that must be monitored. Below are some helpful tips:

• Restrict the frequency of fruit juices between meals.
• It is not the amount of sugar, but the frequency of sugar ingested that can lead to decay.
• Rinse with water after meals and snacks.
• Cheddar cheese fights tooth decay and is a nutritious snack.
