When are dentures needed and what are dentures made of?

Dentures are used to replace several or even all teeth on both the top or bottom of your mouth. Most dentures are composed of hard resin and are meant to be taken out at night for cleaning and to give your mouth a chance to rest.

Dentures are ideal for individuals who have lost some or all of their natural teeth due to various reasons such as decay, gum disease, injury, or age-related factors. Dentures help restore the appearance and functionality of the mouth, enabling people to eat, speak, and smile more comfortably. They can be a suitable option for people who are not candidates for dental implants or bridges, either due to medical conditions, bone density issues, or personal preferences.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures, also known as removable partial dentures, are dental prostheses designed to replace one or more missing teeth when some natural teeth are still present in the mouth. They are used to restore both the function and appearance of the mouth, allowing individuals with missing teeth to eat, speak, and smile more comfortably.

Partial dentures consist of a framework made from materials such as metal or flexible resin, artificial teeth (also known as pontics), and clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth. The framework supports the artificial teeth and helps keep the partial denture in place.

What are full dentures?

Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, are dental prostheses that replace all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, or both. Full dentures are designed to restore both the function and appearance of the mouth, allowing individuals with complete tooth loss to eat, speak, and smile more comfortably.

Full dentures consist of a gum-coloured acrylic base that supports a set of artificial teeth. The base is designed to fit over the gums and rest on the bony ridge that used to hold the natural teeth. The denture is custom-made to closely resemble the natural appearance of teeth and gums, helping to provide a natural-looking smile.
